A Luxurious Course Outside Waco
Located in a nicer part of the greater Waco area, lies a well maintained and scenic golf course. Bear Ridge located in Hewitt, Texas, was the course I chose to play this week.
When I first started this series, I never thought I would get to review this course, due to the price. I like to play golf with my friends, and us being broke college students really limits our options.
Luckily, the ultimate golf partner came down for the tragic Baylor vs. BYU football game, and wanted to forget about the game on the golf course. This partner is my dad. What's great about playing with him is that he is a great golfer, always funny and relaxed on the course, and he pays for the tee time.
The first thing the golfer sees when entering the course grounds is a huge clubhouse. The clubhouse, carts, and course felt like they had been built yesterday. But contrary to how it looks, this course has been around for some time.
When entering the clubhouse, my dad asked, "How long has this course been here?" He said,
"A long time," the worker replied.
Clearly this guy had no clue how long, but I'll take his word for it. Below is a picture of the clubhouse and the surrounding area.
Getting into the actual course, there were a few things that made this place special. First it is a very hard course. Almost every hole has a thick tree line on both sides, making it very hard to hit a driver off the tee box. Secondly there was water on nearly every hole on the course. Oftentimes I had to go around or lay up right in front of the water. Lastly, the greens on this course were very deceiving. Oftentimes the greens looked like they were breaking one way, but then did the exact opposite. In Utah, I learned this is due to the greens lying on a hill.
I'd rate this course a 8/10. The high score is due to how well it was maintained, the gorgeous landscape it played on, and the 3 or 4 unique layouts on the holes that are rarely seen elsewhere. The course struggled in being a casual place to play. Nearly every hole being tight, and every hole having water, caused this to be one of the hardest courses I have ever played. Below are a few more pictures of the different landscapes and holes on the course.
