A Quick Play in Waco
Located north of the lake, in China Springs is Lake Waco golf course. Here there are two different courses, the 18 hole standard course, and the par 3 course. Today I played the par three course in a scramble with a few of my buddies.
The course is well known in Waco and has a very country vibe to it. The golfer drives in and is immediately hit with this feeling. It's not your standard fancy golf course with the clubhouse that looks like a white house, standard white carts, and fancy attire. This place has it's own Texas feel that adds a sense of excitement to the golfer. It feels similar to when one goes to a paintball range, or a gun range, or maybe a track outside of town. I got there and associated it with those special adventures that make life long memories.
The course it's self wasn't anything mind blowing, yet it was still loads of fun. The course is decently maintained with a few shortcoming. The flags wouldn't stay firm in the hole, which is distracting and could mess up what should have been an exceptional approach shot. The greens also had some dead spots and a few of them were to evil. One green might as well have been on the side of a cliff, causing the golfer to go up and down and up and down. The tee boxes were also in pretty bad shape and barely had any good grass for the golfer to hit off of.
Despite all of this, what this course does good it does so good. The layout is so much fun, we were taken by a cliff, the lake, and the driving range, all within just nine holes. The holes themselves were also pretty cool. A few island greens were there as well as some shots that required the golfer to hit a high lofted shot over the green. For some reason in Waco the areas by the river and the lake are so different from the average Texas experience. The cliffs add a lot to the course and so do all of the trees and shrubs. It feels like and escape from the usual scenery of auto shops on Lasalle and imminent doom on the other side of I35.
Overall I think this was a great course and deserves a high rating in the 8/10 range. The tee times was 15 bucks and they gave us the strollers for our clubs for free, because we walked. I would recommend this to anyone trying to get into golf but doesn't as it isn't to long.
